Medicare Levy Surcharge
What is the Medicare Levy Surcharge?
If you’re single and your taxable income is more than $50,000 per annum ($100,000 for couples and families) you may be required to pay the Medicare Levy Surcharge of 1% of your income as part of your annual tax bill, however you may be exempt from this extra surcharge simple by having private hospital cover.
Am I exempt from the Medicare Levy Surcharge if I just have Extras cover?
No, having extras cover alone does not count as having adequate private health insurance – you may still have to pay the MLS.
